AUTHOR'S STATEMENT: This is a listing of musicians, songwriters & singers of West Texas who made some extraordinary contribution or achievement in the fields of singing, songwriting, recordings and/or musical performance. A lot of the individuals listed herein received little credit for their achievements during their lives while some are quite famous today! The time period of the Index includes persons that were active between 1940 and 1970 but sometimes the Index extends beyond these dates. The geographical area generally includes the Panhandle, South Plains & part of the Permian Basin area of Texas. This area includes the Amarillo-Lubbock area, the Odessa-Midland area, and the Big Springs area of West Texas. Most people included in this Index were either born in this area or resided here for a period of time. The main fields of commercial music are included with an emphasis on Rock'n Roll, Western Swing & Country.

Had previously played in the military in a band called 'The Stringbusters'../ most important active period: 1958-66..../ acomplishments: Was featured band and Host on the 'Walsh Food Talent Show' on KDUB-TV, Lubbock, Tx--c.1960. / Awards: Allen and Hank Newman received the 2013 'Pioneer Award' from the West Texas Music HOF. / Allen's band the Sunset Ramblers had played rodeo dances across West Texas and once played opposite Hank Thompson's band. / Allen had played in the 'Stringbusters' band while in Newfoundland in the Air Force in c.1953. They won some talent contests and traveled to DC to play. Allen later recruited two members of this original band (Hank Newman & Bobby Bailey) to come to Lubbock, TX and play with his Sunset Ramblers. His son 'Joe Barnhill' has been a Nashville singing artist since the 1990's and one song 'Your old Flames going out tonight' reached the national county charts.

Bowen, Jimmy__/ from: Dumas,TX / skills: singer, recording artist, record producer & music executive / active: c.1956--2000 / noted song (as a singer): I'm Stickin with You / label: Roulette / Bowen began his career in music as a member of the 'Rhythm Orchids' of Canyon,TX with Buddy Knox / They each had a top twenty hit in c.1957 on the first releases by the new Roulette Records of New York./ Knox's singing career continued for several years afterwards but Bowen's soon faltered. He then entered music as a 'Producer' in California where Reprise soon hired him to produce hits for their older artists including Dean Martin, Frank Sanatra, etc. He was so successful that after a few years he quit Reprise and started his own company but eventually he moved to Nashville and began producing noted country artists. He was so successful in Music City that he eventually became the president of Capital-Nashville, the label that Garth Brooks recorded for./ The claim has been made that Jimmy Bowen revolutionized the music industry in Nashville almost single-handedly and helped numerous artists achieve gold and platinum albums. Bowen is also one of the few persons that began their career in Norman Petty's Clovis studio who actually won more awards than his mentor and had his name attached to more hit records! /

Hess, Bennie__/ born in Chriesman, TX in 1914 / singer, label owner & recording artist / Hess founded at least 4 labels that are rare today: Opera, Jet, Spade, Pearl / songs of note: Wild Hog Hop, The Bennie Hess Boogie / note: Hess once had a regular radio show on KFYO in Lubbock, TX probably in the thirties or forties. He also lived in Los Angeles, Houston and Nashville at various times during his life. He later promoted his son Troy as the youngest recording artist in the world in c.1970 while living in Nashville. Bennie Hess died in 1984 as one of the most colorful persons that ever worked within the music field. He claimed to have Jimmy Rodger's original guitar in 1971 & did have an old Martin similiar. /

Holmes, Sid__/ from: San Angelo,TX / Born c.1940 / skill: guitarist / founding member: The Cavaliers band of San Angelo / During his time with this band they played in West Texas, New Orleans and Memphis, TN (1957--1961) / J. Frank Wilson joined the band as lead singer sometime near the end of Holmes era in c.1963. / Holmes & the Cavaliers had recorded an instrumental titled 'Crazy Guitar' that had been a regional hit in c.1959 / None of the original Cavaliers were with Wilson when he toured with his hit 'Last Kiss' in which his manager was killed in a wreck. But Holmes may have rejoined the group after Wilson had retired and he is today considered their finest guitarist. /

State Representative Hop Halsey and his sister Joyce alternated as emcees of the show. Both Henry and Shorty are mentioned in the 'Handbook of Texas' under the 'East Texas Serenaders'.
